Speech Hand Synchronization Approach

The human being has been distinguished by good creation and awareness of the senses. The wisdom of the Almighty required that some human should suffer from some certain of problems. Regrettably, care for those people takes place only late after it has become difficult to make a difference in the problem.
The problem of stuttering is defined as a disorder that affects speech fluency and impedes its natural flow. This problem is manifested in various forms of repetitions, prolongation and or blockage that may be followed by involuntary movements that affect the human beings, and impede normal communication in a way incompatible with age, gender or society.
Despite the direct effects of stuttering, speech dysfluency may affect the quality of life, physical, psychological, social, educational aspects on the person who stutter and his or her family as well.
Therefore, the speech fluency® application has been invented to fulfil the need to treating stuttering cases. The speech fluency application is encouraged by the absence of similar programs in the Arab world with the low number of clinicians. This App will be met fulfil the needs of diagnosis, treat and follow-ups all dysfluency clients, where global studies have shown that the prevalence of the problem in children and adolescents is 5%, and in adults accounted for 1%.
TheApp will be supervised by the best local expertise that is highly efficient, capable of developing, creating and providing therapeutic quality to all people who suffer from stuttering, which is considered a turning point in their lives. This in turn will reduce effort and costs by the family, society and the state.

The Approach

Speech Hand Synchronization Approach is designed to help the people who stutter. It provides professional services for children, adults and their families according to the latest scientific and technological methods, relying on highly qualified team.
The SHSwas based on long years of clinical experience as well as academic experience. The SHS documented in the world’s top universities (MSc and PhD). This approachhas been presented at the most important international conferences and has been documented. The results of these studies have been very promising and encouraging.
Latterly, the SHS is available as an electronic application that interacts directly with the person who stutter. This application used to help PWS to improve their fluency by simulating a 24/7 virtual clinic in their smart-phones and/or tablet. The goal of this application is to learn to manage old speech style (stuttering) through learning a new good speech style (fluent speech) which combines the use of hand movement that synchronized with prolonged speech. This application can be an effective bridge between clinical-based therapy and home-based stuttering treatment in the global population.

Mission and vision

Our mission is to provide distinguished services to treat children and adults who stutter according to international standards in acceptance, diagnosis, treatment and follow-ups. We also aim to develop, train, research, and transfer knowledge to speech language pathologist.

The target group of this program

6.   Development, training, scientificresearch and transfer of knowledge to SLP and to those who interested in dysfluency disorders.

Therapy program history

The therapeutic program used in the application is called ‘speech-hand-synchronization approach’ (SHS). SHS is a hybrid approach that integrates several different therapeutic techniques and processes used to treat stuttering, such as hand movements (HM), prolonged speech (PS) (Onslow, Jones, O’Brian, & Menzies, 2007), fluency shaping approaches (e.g., Ryan, 2000), self evaluation, habits and paradigm shift (e.g., Buzan, 2001 & Covey, 1984). These deal with the attitudinal and emotional stuttering aspects.
The SHS approach can be described as cognitive/behavioural treatment for persons suffering with persistent developmental stuttering. This particular approach based on MSc dissertation (MMU; 2010) and PhD thesis (UoR; 2014). Additionally, it is been presented by the researcher in Oxford Dysfluency Conference (ODC), which is the most prestigious conference within the field of disorders of fluency, and attendees come from across the globe. In 2013, also, the SHS has presented at Basic Science and Stuttering: Research for Clinicians symposium in Croatia.
